Paper back

After an accident the author spent a few days at death’s door. He made miraculous recovery but over the course of the next seven years he experienced glimpses of another person’s life. Over time he was able to assemble the bits and pieces of these memories into a story that this soul wanted told.

Eli is a very young soldier that falls in love at a USO dance the eve of his deployment to the European war theater in 1943. In this one evening they share stories of events that had transpired in their young lives. Eli tells of the events that had followed a pencil falling to the floor in a Fayette Iowa shoe store that brought him to meet Mayme in Atlantic City this night. Mayme theorizes fate has brought them together purposely by causing infinitesimal happenstances at just the required moments. Eli and Mayme reveal their deepest desires and wishes of what would make a perfect life’s partner. They determine that each is the one for the other. The reader will feel the heartache they felt on their parting at the end of this evening.

On the trip overseas Eli encounters a very evil man who remains Eli’s antagonist throughout the rest of the story until they ultimately have a showdown.

On his last visit to the author, Eli reveals an event that proves he had cohabitated in the author’s body from the first day of the author’s life.

On the back jacket:

A falling pencil in a Fayette Iowa shoe store starts a chain of events that brings Eli Bailey and Mayme Richards, both twenty years old, together in Atlantic City to discover true love.

Years earlier Eli's father had hypothesized a theory he stated as “The paths of two objects already in motion through time will be nudged to intersect by the ripple of a pebble that Fate caused to drop at a precise moment.” This definition is repeated to Mayme when Eli explains the consequences of that falling pencil months before their meeting.

When Mayme, a firm believer in destiny’s influence, names his father’s premise INFINITESIMAL HAPPENSTANCE she exclaims, “I have given a wonderful name to your father’s magnificent theory.”
